on comfort foods and sloth....
Mike inspired me with his hot dog post( a favorite here too sans the doritos -I'll have to try that ) Well , we are all out sick from school today. Oliver reads "Redwall" Arthur plays free games on the computer. I watch "Shogun Assassin" - which is awesome! and my F-Troop box - an interesting double -feature. we all watch the "Monster Squad" We are finishing up watching the last ( and worst , but still entertaining ) entry into the Planet of the Apes series ,tonite - The kids loved Cornelius, Zira and Armando, and found Kolp suitably loathsome. We have had some great conversations regarding Apes and the timeline - it really is an awesome series. It has been comfort food central in casa de stickney -brought on by the twin whammies of poverty ( Tuesday's going out to eat night? - no dice this week)and the return of the "stomach bug" that gurgly,both-endy nightmare that wanes but doesn't seem to go away- that has laid low two of your three correspondents. But anyway- yesterday I made personal pizzas and corn fritters - Today -deviled ham with leftover ham for lunch and peanut butter chicken wings and baked potatoes for dinner- mmm-yummy -wish I could get motivated for something anything else, but alas.... life goes on and on
Hello, It's Dave- by now many of you have heard of what has happened to me, to Ryan , to our family. Ryan loves someone else , somehow, while I wasn't aware , the love of my life, my best friend, my soulmate, my confidante went away. For her, it has been a two month separation from me , and perhaps much longer - for me it is only two weeks and change. When did she stop believing in us? I worry about me, I worry wbout the kids, and I worry about Ryan - she has lost a lot in this. Now that the news stories on TV and the newspaper stuff has calmed down a bit - it remains what it has been - a personal tragedy. There was a time where she could tell me anything and we were together through happy and sad. That time seems, for now, to be gone. And all of our futures have become uncertain. But,I love her and always will ...... Please write, call ,or come by This is very lonely Love Dave | | Thursday, January 4th, 2007 | | 10:26 pm |
a call for help

Two great character actors pass away......
Hello all, Two of my very favorite actors have passed away this weekend -Darren McGavin and Don Knotts. I feel like I grew up with both of them and they gave me plenty of pop-culture memories that I cherish. Darren McGavin was probably best known as "The Old Man" in "A Christmas Story" - and he was excellent in that movie( when he is swearing in the basement or when he says"what a great lamp" are priceless, but for my money , he will always be Carl Kolchak - seersucker suited reporter for INS on the TV show "The Night Stalker" - he was brilliant ,fighting monsters like the Rakshasa or fighting with Tony Vincenzo(the equally brilliant Simon Oakland) and while the monsters sometimes bordered on cheesy , and there were far too many palm trees visible for a show that by and large was set in Chicago, it was a monster lovers dream and the X-files and Buffy and a host of other occult and monster hunter shows owe it all to "The Night Stalker." They recently released the series on DVD and myself and my children enjoy them immensly. And the two pilot movies are also awesome - between Kolchak snapping pictures as the vampire tosses policemne around to the underground city of of Old Seatttle in "The Night Strangler" - they were , for my money, some of the best TV movies ever. And Don Knotts - of course wonderful as Barney Fife and slightly pathetic as Mr Furley, but my memories go to his short lived movie career - "The Incredible Mr. Limpet" and "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken"- My co-creator Dean and myself still always say "atta boy Luther!" as part of our schtick every year at the Castle of the Damned and the creepy organ music is one of the best piecs of film music ever(Thanks Vic Mizzy) - while "the Love God?" and "The Reluctant Astronaut" are also very entertaining , Don Knotts walking through the haunted murder house in "Mr. Chicken" is sublime(in its way). Goodbye Kolchak and "AttaBoy Luther!" | | Friday, January 20th, 2006 | | 5:05 pm |
tagged by my loverly wife .....I like tagging her ,too, if ya know what I mean....
Here's five of my guilty pleasures..........( among many) 1) some really crappy eighties movies just blow my skirt up- chief among them - Year of the Dragon, Married to the Mob, Warlock , Less Than Zero and several others which I own , and yet still watch them when they are on TV- and let's not even explore the wonderful world of 80's porn Ginger Lynn,Christy Canyon , Keisha and others - good times......... 2) If i could , i would subsist on a rotating diet of dim-sum, Armenian bakery food, and Carnegie Deli . 3)I am a book-o-dvd-o-cd-costume-o-holic - If I had a wallet full of $100 bills- would i invest in my children's future with college funds or well placed investment-? no, i 'd go on riotous spending spree 4) Gilligan's Island -love it ,love it - The musical Hamlet, The dream episodes where Mr.Howell is a prospector, or Gilligan is a vampire or dr.Gilligan and mr. Hyde, the one where Gilligan looks like and island god and has to see "poloo see bagumba" to free his fellow castaways, the one with the russian ghost - what a great show - almost equal to it is Lost in Space- which I also love and my kids love, too( I have alot to answer for) 5)Godzilla Movies - I am a Toho fanatic- give me Gargantuas, Ghidrah or Gaint Majjin and I am transported ........ | | Monday, November 14th, 2005 | | 8:34 am |

Old KRF staff member passes away
Hello all, I just found out an friend of mine from the old KRF days passed away on August 5th. Peter Tambone was operations manager at KRF in the mid-90's- a truly gracious, creative, friendly and smart man,he truly made his mark on the show. In 1997, we shared terrible losses of loved ones after long illnesses- he, his dear wife, and me my mother - we would often sit outside of the costume trailer and talk about our mutual grief . When Bonnie Shapiro sued me a few years back, he offered support, advice and comfort during that trying time, and I think he was key in helping me secure a victory in that case. We talked a long time at Bodge's memorial service up at Hammond a few days after she passed away , once again sharing our grief. He truly cared about making faires in general and KRF in particular better shows, and I will miss him. Dave | | Thursday, August 18th, 2005 | | 12:25 am |
This is actually Ryan - posting in Dave's journal because he never does and he is awesome and got the most amazing score on the humor quiz! I mean, I know he is super funny- but man, I am jealous of his score! All I got was "Comic" and it says I'm like Rodney Dangerfield- how lame. Here are Dave's kick ass results. Of course the cut and paste thingy wasn't really working, but here's the text: the Wit (61% dark, 23% spontaneous, 15% vulgar) your humor style: CLEAN | COMPLEX | DARK You like things edgy, subtle, and smart. I guess that means you're probably an intellectual, but don't take that to mean pretentious. You realize 'dumb' can be witty--after all isn't that the Simpsons' philosophy?--but rudeness for its own sake, 'gross-out' humor and most other things found in a fraternity leave you totally flat. I guess you just have a more cerebral approach than most. You have the perfect mindset for a joke writer or staff writer. Your sense of humor takes the most thought to appreciate, but it's also the best, in my opinion. You probably loved the Office. If you don't know what I'm talking about, check it out here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/theoffice/. PEOPLE LIKE YOU: Jon Stewart - Woody Allen - Ricky Gervais My test tracked 3 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender: You scored higher than 99% on dark You scored higher than 99% on spontaneous You scored higher than 99% on vulgar If you liked my test, send it to your friends! Hey I love this book and author
You're The Guns of August!
by Barbara Tuchman
Though you're interested in war, what you really want to know is what causes war. You're out to expose imperialism, militarism, and nationalism for what they really are. Nevertheless, you're always living in the past and have a hard time dealing with what's going on today. You're also far more focused on Europe than anywhere else in the world. A fitting motto for you might be "Guns do kill, but so can diplomats."

In lieu of doing actual work............
I came to a stunning realization yesterday- in a rare moment of introspection I like to work..... Maybe its my A.A.D.D, which prevents me from idling or almost ever relaxing ( except for late night with the Daily Show or a movie),or maybe its my always in the back of my mind concerns about me breaking down in health , but I want, no I need to ,keep going and doing , creating ,see the world, think of new ideas , do new projects, take on way more than I can chew, show the kids movies and museums and experiences in a fevered whirl which sometimes feels like a race against the clock. Maybe its having the office in the house, so close all the time , taunting me when I sit down on the couch for a movie. I want to see the world,I want to be a REAL creative personand try to help others create and be the artists they want to be .I thought it would be helpful to write down my jobs for this year Father of two energetic and wonderful boys with all the budding theater/art,soccer,piano activities Husband of a very smart soon-to-be- teacher Director of 4 big Pastimes shows and a few smaller ones Performer, producer, and sometime writer for these shows conceptualizing new projects and venues performer for corporate parties etc. Pope at CTRF Gravedigger for Ghosts and Gravestones Associate director for R&J Colonial Guide for Sons and Daughters of Liberty tour of Boston Teacher at AfterSchool Program director of the Afterschool Harry Potter play Minister for Four weddings this year Fundraising Comittee and board member at my church Oh, that's where all the time goes peaceout D Reminder to me - Thoughts on the new Pastimes show King Henry's Feast , First Parish Faire and Thoughts on KAF | | Friday, April 1st, 2005 | | 10:11 am |

Meetin' time........
Ah meetings and more meetings in an endless search for fufillment and cash.............. Last night- two of them- one at church attended by my wife and t'other up in Newburyport - both very productive. First Parish Faire meeting- oh , the wonder of just being in charge of entertainment and not producing - I already have an excellent roster of variety(AutumnTree,Charlotte,Dina,Sean, etc, already confirmed) and I don't have to go through the "if I hire this act, will my family eat?" thing. Nice . Redesigning the site a bit with the commitee, including a tourney field . Lots of excellent feedback( and offers of testimonials for the website) about last year's faire and I think this one will even be better. I am going to be doing my costumed sermon again to the First Parish congregation , and looking forward to it. Church Meeting- worries about money and membership and repairs, but lo! a light on the horizon- fundraising by several theater people, including your correspondent and his lovely wife. Brainstorming about blackbox theaters with Ryann and events with Michelle- a new , albeit small ,venue.Renaissance dinners and faires and -well its nice to have a space to work, and create, in. Meeting with Holly on Monday to see if the "transfer of power" can take place - its just what she wants to do, Ryann will be doing just what she wants to do, and Pastimes can continue to grow and create - Gad,I hope it works- i think she will be really good Meetings with clients- Developing packages for CTP...... What we bring to the table - quality performers, costumes, scripts and ideas all in a neat package- what they bring - excellent marketing and advertising ,exposure and connections- could be a match made in heaven , unless it isn't The top secret project meetings (shhhh) meetings held in dimly lit alleys and under tables in seldom-visited restaurants- new directions and concepts for the enviromental theater experience More fleshing out of the Pirate Faire in meeting with Paul , henpecked pirate villains( with the perfect actor inthe role-hopefully) ,A Sabatini-esque heroic pirate( perfect for another I have in mind), Blackbeard, slimy Walls, and more- Also, fleshing out RHF- holy guacamole! we're doing stuff early ! Now to get the perfect cast....... The theatrical monkey is on my back - sometimes he gnaws on my neck , others times he rogers me nicely and on that disturbing note........ Salem Pirate Faire and stormy seas
Rehearsals for KAF are going really well - Monday and Thursday's had excellent focus, and great acting work - maybe its the new rehearsal space, maybe its my dynamic assistant director and stage manager(Michelle and Robin are simply the best in the business) or maybe its the theater not faire vibe, but the drama is crackling, the acting is deep and intense , and I think the show is going to be something that goes beyond the usual faire experience. thanks to all involved for that. . Of course, there is always a fly in the ointment- you cruise along and it seems someone is always out there to cold-cock you in the back of the head. Commitments are being compromised, backdoor dealings, and worst of all , ill words behind friendly faces. Vagueries from your correspondent? Unfortunately , yes. Suffice it say, there seems to be a competition that I was not aware of waiting in the wings, and it already seems to be putting old and new dear friends in the middle. Damn. It has made my open communication a little less open , and forced us to keep our cards that much closer to our vest. But I don't believe in sitting back and stewing and so...... Over a late meal last night Paul and I rough out-lined the Pirate Faire script for this year, and for our guests who enjoyed the proceedings so much last year, this year's plot is even better! There is the return of some old villains, some new pirates and some very interesting twists in the plot . There is already a great buzz for this show, though it is months away. Creativity is always good medicine for me when I am upset, so this (along with a pu-pu platter) was just what I needed last night . So that's my story , with many a laugh and tear, now to clean the dining room , so we are not eating on top of a mountain of costumes for Easter dinner Dave |
